Staying safe online

Online technology such as your mobile phone is a great way to stay connected to your friends and family, to share things and to get information, so it can literally be a lifeline if you are in an abusive relationship.

However, it is very common for abusers to monitor or control their partners’ use of technology and the internet. You are not alone in this, and there are steps you can take to cover your tracks to help keep yourself safe and to protect your privacy.

For more information about staying safe online please visit Refuge’s tech safety website.

This site includes a short, animated film which illustrates common forms and experiences of technology facilitated abuse. The website also provides 17 step-by-step support guides covering a range of device and account settings, created specifically with domestic abuse survivors’ safety in mind. The guides provide easy to follow instructions on how to secure the settings for a range of commonly used devices and accounts, with cautions provided throughout where an action could notify an abuser.

Border Women’s Aid would like to thank Refuge for allowing us to link to their site.
